I’m Dreaming of a Green Christmas: How Climate Change is Reshaping Christmas Tree Farming in Southern Ontario
Recently, our team worked in collaboration with the team at the Canadian Centre for Climate Services to dive into this topic. Read here to explore how climate change is reshaping this uniquely Canadian industry—and why these trees matter long after the holidays end.
Policy Brief: Protecting Ontario’s Christmas Tree Industry from Increasing Climate Change Risks
In August 2025, our team published a policy brief on the climate risks facing Ontario’s Christmas tree industry. The report highlights how rising temperatures, shifting precipitation patterns, and increasing pests and diseases are already affecting growers in the province. These trends are comparable to other agricultural sectors, however this report draws attention to how Christmas trees as a crop are notably absent from agricultural and climate policy frameworks. With insights from climate and policy research and conversations with growers, the brief recommends five key action areas: safeguarding cultural heritage, aligning crop insurance policies with tree farming, addressing climate-driven pests and diseases, integrating Christmas tree farms into climate policy, and promoting post-holiday tree recycling as a contribution to sustainability.
